If you just have a planter, don’t you want the best-tasting tomato? If you have a 4’ x 4’ bed, there are lots of delicious plants you can grow. If you have a large area, you still want the most mouth-watering produce. Master Gardener Ann Burrell will give us tips on which varieties to plant – including some you may not have encountered yet. Ann grew up in England where her father was in charge of the market garden on an English estate (imagine a smaller version of Downton Abbey). Rhododendron experts will recognize Leonardslee in Sussex. After obtaining an undergraduate degree in Botany from Imperial College, she moved into molecular biology research, specializing in DNA repair mechanisms and cancer research. A post-doc at Stanford followed, where she met her husband. He was already growing vegetables in a friend's backyard so it was natural that a house with a yard to grow vegetables would be the next acquisition. She can vouch that such yards also grow a lot of weeds!! After a career at IBM as a toxicologist, she retired and became a UCCE accredited Master Gardener where she enjoys working in the Palo Alto demonstra[on garden, teaching, and learning from experts about horticulture and related topics.
